(Kevin Frayer\/Associated Press)[\/caption]\r\n\r\nFrom The New York Times, May 22 2012:\r\n\r\n\u201cThey were totally silent, very quick and highly effective.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe monkey population of Delhi has grown so large and aggressive that overwhelmed city officials have petitioned <a title=\"More news and information about India.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/international\/countriesandterritories\/india\/index.html?inline=nyt-geo\">India<\/a>\u2019s Supreme Court to relieve them of the task of monkey control.\r\n\r\n\u201cWe have trapped 13,013 monkeys since 2007,\u201d said R. B. S. Tyagi, director of veterinary services for Delhi\u2019s principal city government. Nonetheless, Delhi\u2019s monkey population has only increased.\r\n\r\nThe reason is simple: People feed them. Monkeys are the living representatives of the cherished Hindu god Hanuman, and Hindu tradition calls for feeding monkeys on Tuesdays and Saturdays.\r\n\r\nDr. Tyagi expressed impatience with residents who feed the monkeys one day, then complain to the city when the monkeys steal their clothes on another day.\r\n\r\nDr. Tyagi\u2019s agency has asked the city\u2019s wildlife agency for help, but wildlife officials claim that the monkeys \u2014 a scourge of the city for years as urbanization has encroached on their original habitat \u2014 are no longer wild and are thus not their responsibility.\r\n\r\n\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/05\/23\/world\/asia\/fed-by-indians-monkeys-overwhelm-delhi.html\">The New York Times, \"<em>Indians Feed the Monkeys, Which Bite the Hand\"<\/em><\/a>\r\n\r\n<img src=\"http:\/\/www.dailynews.lk\/2007\/05\/18\/z_wld350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"181\" \/>","type":"rich"}
