It forms a center from which other roots sprout laterally.<sup id=\"cite_ref-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taproot#cite_note-0\"><span>[<\/span>1<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"width: 222px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Carrots_of_many_colors.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/3\/32\/Carrots_of_many_colors.jpg\/220px-Carrots_of_many_colors.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"355\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<div><a title=\"Enlarge\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Carrots_of_many_colors.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/bits.wikimedia.org\/skins-1.5\/common\/images\/magnify-clip.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The taproot of <a title=\"Carrot\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carrot\">Carrots<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Plants with taproots are difficult to <a title=\"Transplanting\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transplanting\">transplant<\/a>. The presence of a taproot is why <a title=\"Dandelion\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dandelion\">dandelions<\/a> are hard to uproot \u2014 the top is pulled, but the long taproot stays in the ground, and re-sprouts.<\/p>\n<p>Most plants start with a taproot,<sup id=\"cite_ref-Mauseth2009_1-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taproot#cite_note-Mauseth2009-1\"><span>[<\/span>2<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> which is one main root forming from the enlarging radical of the seed.  The tap root can be persistent through out the life of the plant but is  most often replaced later in the plants development by a fibrous root  system.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Mauseth2009_1-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taproot#cite_note-Mauseth2009-1\"><span>[<\/span>2<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-BergBerg2007_2-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taproot#cite_note-BergBerg2007-2\"><span>[<\/span>3<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>A  persistent taproot system forms when the radical keeps growing and  smaller lateral roots form along the taproot; often the radical dies  some after seed germination causing the development of a fibrous root  system which lacks one main downward growing root. Most <a title=\"Tree\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tree\">trees<\/a> begin life with a taproot,<sup id=\"cite_ref-BergBerg2007_2-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taproot#cite_note-BergBerg2007-2\"><span>[<\/span>3<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> but after one to a few years the main root system changes to a  wide-spreading fibrous root system with mainly horizontal growing  surface roots and only a few vertical, deep anchoring roots.
