Humans are \t    now changing the world on a global scale and ushering in the new era \t    in geologic time.<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/oceanworld.tamu.edu\/resources\/oceanography-book\/anthropocene.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\u2013 Oceanography in the 21st Century<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>It has no precise start date, but may be considered to start in the late 18th century when the activities of <a title=\"Human\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human\">humans<\/a> first began to have a significant global impact on the Earth&#8217;s <a title=\"Climate\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Climate\">climate<\/a> and <a title=\"Ecosystem\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecosystem\">ecosystems<\/a>. This date coincides with <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"James Watt (inventor)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Watt_%28inventor%29\">James Watt<\/a>&#8216;s invention of the <a title=\"Steam engine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steam_engine\">steam engine<\/a> in 1784. The term was coined in 2000 by the <a title=\"Nobel Prize\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nobel_Prize\">Nobel Prize<\/a> winning atmospheric chemist <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Paul Crutzen\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Crutzen\">Paul Crutzen<\/a>, (<\/em>who unpacked the process of atmospheric ozone depletion) <em>who regards the influence of human behavior on the Earth in recent centuries as so significant as to constitute a new <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Geological era\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geological_era\">geological era<\/a>. <\/em><br \/>\n\u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthropocene\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Geologists from the University of Leicester propose that humankind has so altered the Earth that it has brought about an end to one epoch of Earth\u2019s history and marked the start of a new epoch &#8211; the Anthropocene.<br \/>\nThey have identified human impact through phenomena such as:<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Transformed patterns of sediment erosion and deposition worldwide<br \/>\n\u2022 Major disturbances to the carbon cycle and global temperature<br \/>\n\u2022 Wholesale changes to the world\u2019s plants and animals<br \/>\n\u2022 Ocean acidification<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>The scientists analysed a proposal made by Nobel Prize-winning chemist Paul Crutzen in 2002. He suggested the Earth had left the Holocene and started the Anthropocene era because of the global environmental effects of increased human population and economic development.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_m6sVhskT_Fs\/R5oSkaBEujI\/AAAAAAAABgo\/DPBZo1kcZys\/s1600-h\/an.jpg\"><img style=\"border: 1px solid #000000; margin: 2px;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_m6sVhskT_Fs\/R5oSkaBEujI\/AAAAAAAABgo\/DPBZo1kcZys\/s400\/an.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The researchers argue that the dominance of humans has so physically changed Earth that there is increasingly less justification for linking pre- and post-industrialized Earth within the same epoch &#8211; the Holocene.<\/em><br \/>\n\u2013 from <a href=\"http:\/\/palaeoblog.blogspot.com\/2008_01_01_archive.html\" target=\"_blank\">Paleoblog<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New geological ages are characterized by changes in global environmental conditions and large scale shifts in types of species.
