{"id":60,"date":"2009-04-06T22:02:49","date_gmt":"2009-04-06T22:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zurkow.wordpress.com\/?p=60"},"modified":"2009-04-10T19:10:43","modified_gmt":"2009-04-10T23:10:43","slug":"reading-animal-erica-fudge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/o-matic.com\/blog-archive-2022\/blog\/2009\/04\/06\/reading-animal-erica-fudge\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading: Animal, Erica Fudge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>(Corey Wolfe, Michael Pollan, Erica Fudge, read like cornball-edly obvious fictional names, but their books are great)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"http:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">ITP<\/a> I&#8217;m teaching a class called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/animals\/\" target=\"_blank\">Animals, People and Those in Between.<\/a>&#8221;<br \/>\nThis book, in addition to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1845204700?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=omat-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1845204700\" target=\"_blank\">The Animals Reader<\/a>, was super-useful, covering a lot of ground both on the history of people&#8217;s attitudes towards animals (from Aristotle, Descartes and Bentham to Peter Singer, and Tom Regan,\u00a0 Carol Adams, Yi-Fu Tuan et al), but also a survey on more radical and critical takes on the subject.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1861891342?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=omat-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1861891342\" target=\"_blank\">Animal<\/a> is a clear and critical\u00a0 guide to &#8216;reading&#8217; animals, and asking questions of everyone trafficking in animals,\u00a0 from the view points of science, fashion, advertising and philosophy. Fudge gives a great summary of Peter Singer&#8217;s work in chapter 2, &#8220;Real and Symbolic: Questions of Difference&#8221; as well as magic acts revealed in her treatment of Ham the NASA chimp, the His Master&#8217;s Voice dog, and PETA + fake fur.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 173px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/41S3HJF47RL._SL500_AA240_.jpg\" alt=\"Animal by Erica Fudge\" width=\"173\" height=\"173\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Animal by Erica Fudge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1861891342?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=omat-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1861891342\" target=\"_blank\">You can get the book on Amazon<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This book&#8217;s part of the Focus on Contemporary Issues series by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reaktionbooks.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reaktion Books<\/a>, who has a great series called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reaktionbooks.co.uk\/series.html?id=1\" target=\"_blank\">Animal<\/a>.\u00a0 The series&#8217; titles include <em>Ant, Bear, Cockroach, Cat, Crow, Eel, Elephant.<\/em>.. They&#8217;re written by a spectrum of eminent nature-culture writers. I loved Fly, which covered the natural and cultural histories of, yeah, flies. Author Stephen Connor describes the fly as one who \u201ctakes its pleasure promiscuously, restlessly, unswervably, unashamedly&#8230;. Each fly is king of his own country.
