{"id":632,"date":"2009-05-01T13:00:08","date_gmt":"2009-05-01T17:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/o-matic.com\/blog\/\/?p=632"},"modified":"2009-05-01T13:17:27","modified_gmt":"2009-05-01T17:17:27","slug":"when-reds-were-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/o-matic.com\/blog\/blog\/2009\/05\/01\/when-reds-were-dead\/","title":{"rendered":"When Reds were dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not sorry that the squirrel-human gyre keeps widening.<\/p>\n<p>There was apparently a time, not long ago, that the Squirrel Clubs of the Scottish Highlands had their sites on the Reds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homedecor.cafepress.com\/item\/red-squirrel-ii-wall-clock\/115843564\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-645 aligncenter\" title=\"115843564v8_350x350_front\" src=\"http:\/\/o-matic.com\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/115843564v8_350x350_front-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"115843564v8_350x350_front\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/o-matic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/115843564v8_350x350_front-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/o-matic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/115843564v8_350x350_front-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/o-matic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/115843564v8_350x350_front.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This week the BBC published in a historical report,<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/uk_news\/scotland\/highlands_and_islands\/8023283.stm\" target=\"_self\"> &#8216;Send Me Tails of Red Squirrels&#8217;<\/a> that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;from 1903, there was an active effort on estates across the Highlands to trap, shoot and kill reds.<\/p>\n<p>By 1946, the Highland Squirrel Club had killed 102,900 squirrels and paid out \u00a31,504 in bounties.<\/p>\n<p><!-- E SF -->Tails were submitted as proof of kills.<\/p>\n<p>There are several ironies in the story of the club, which was formed in 1903.<\/p>\n<p>Reds were extinct, or on the brink of extinction, in the Highlands by the 1800s because of a loss of woodland habitat.<\/p>\n<p>In 1844, Lady Lovat of Beaufort Estate near Beauly, succeeded in getting the government to re-introduce the squirrels to the Highlands.<\/p>\n<p>Ian Collier, of the Highland Red Squirrel Group &#8211; a modern day organisation set up to protect reds &#8211; believed the creatures were seen by some owners of &#8220;big houses&#8221; as a &#8220;fashion accessory&#8221; to add to their landscaped gardens.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Collier said: &#8220;What is ironic is that many of the red squirrels were re-introduced from England, now among the worst-hit areas for squirrel pox, which kills reds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Other reds were introduced from populations in Sweden.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not sorry that the squirrel-human gyre keeps widening.
